Some IRS Letters Get Into Wrong Hands
BackSeveral metro-area residents said the IRS made a mistake with their tax rebate letters. Several residents contacted KMBC saying they got an envelope in the mail from the IRS that had a mistake inside. The correct names and addresses were printed on the envelope, but the letter inside was addressed to someone else. Residents said the letter revealed how much their tax rebate would be. On Monday afternoon, Chuck Regner opened an envelope with his son's name and address on it, but he said he quickly noticed that something didn't add up. "When my single son gets more money back than I do and I'm married, that kind of got my attention," Regner told KMBC's Marcus Moore. "That's when I saw that he was getting $1,553 back, and he's single unmarried and no kids. Then I realized it was for a woman with three children." The letter inside was actually for a neighbor down the street who has children. Regner was calling KMBC about the mixup when he heard a knock at the door -- it was a woman who had his son's letter. "Why can't they get it right? They've got all of our money," Regner said. An IRS representative told KMBC that they're investigating the complaints.
