Devinull Poetry Archive 3- Keeping the Strange Hours

Back

One of my many insomniac poems: Keeping the Strange Hours 07/03/08I’ve been up too late againIn the too long night,The starving cats do scream,The street sweeper trucks go by.Insular slumming college kids shuffle doublestep,The homeless lie still beneath awnings,Their angles indistinguishable from debris.Phantom cars speed with phantom cargoes,Beginner truckers trying to fill quotas. The junior cop With the short ticketAnd the long patrol,For probably nothing,Or at most a drunkNot wise enough to wait enough.Dawn’s a tardy promise,Rumored at horizon,The mind builds hallucinationsOf the weirdness that doesn’t really happen.I writeOr else no memories stick,To parse night from night,Within a life that seems a processionOf these infinite nights.
